The Oceanographer Melbourne Cup dream will now be a little tougher having been given a 1kg weight penalty. However, despite the penalty, his win in the Lexus Stakes has seen the horse storm up the betting charts for the Melbourne Cup.
Greg Carpenter, the Racing Victoria chief handicapper is the man that handed out the penalty. He announced that he had penalised Oceanographer with 1kg and brought his handicap up to 51kg for the Melbourne Cup. His reasoning was his storming performance in the Lexus Stakes where he ran down Tom Melbourne to claim the win.
The bookmakers also noted this strong performance and quickly made oceanographer the second favourite for the race. The Appleby trained and Godolpin owned galloper is now priced at between $5 and $6 with most of them.
Oceanographer Melbourne Cup Weight Penalty Rare
Carpenter said in a statement:
“In the last eight years only two horses we have given a penalty to, Maluckyday in 2010, who got a kilo and ran second and Signoff got a kilo two years ago and ran fourth,”
“Oceanographer was very impressive at Geelong even though he ran third behind Qewy and Grey Lion and in the handicapping panel’s view, was very impressive again today.”
“Eight of the last nine Lexus winners have finished top 10 (in the Melbourne Cup) so their record is very good backing up.”
Chad Schofield will be the jockey riding Oceanographer in the Melbourne Cup. He won the seat after Kerrin McEvoy committed to riding Almandin in the race on Tuesday.
