Craig Newitt claims he is completely prepared if he is chosen to race Grey Lion in the Melbourne Cup. He is hoping to get the nod over Glen Boss to ride the Matt Cumani trained runner on Tuesday. Newitt learned a lot about riding Grey Lion in a gallop at Werribee on Thursday. He was able to sit off Gallic Chieftain before passing him easily down the straight.
Tom Melbourne the Key for Craig Newitt
As it stands now, Glen Boss is booked to ride Grey Lion but this was done very tentatively. He is still the firm favourite for the ride but Newitt could still have a chance. If Tom Melbourne manages to win the Lexus Stakes on Saturday, Boss is expected to opt for that horse instead. Ultimately, this would leave Grey Lion requiring the services of Newitt.
Additionally, Newitt has stated that Grey Lion is definitely a horse that makes the jockey earn his money. He believes whoever gets the ride will have to do constant work to get the best out of him in the Melbourne Cup.
Newitt claimed after his gallop on Grey Lion:
“Whoever rides him will earn their money,”
“He takes a fair bit of riding but what I like is that he will definitely stay.”
He then added “It is the first time I’ve sat on him, obviously his run in the Geelong Cup was very good, he has taken no harm from it, he has trained on well.
Cumani Happy Too
Matt Cumani was also pleased with the run out of Grey Lion on Thursday. He said “It went perfectly to plan, the main thing is that he has come out of Geelong in good shape,”. He is now full of confidence that Grey Lion is now perfectly ready for the Melbourne Cup.
For Matt however, just having a runner in the Melbourne Cup is a dream come true let alone winning it. He finished with “I feel like I haven’t eaten for about three weeks, I’m really excited and can’t believe I’ve got a runner in the Cup.”
